2018 Top 50 Suppliers: How New OneTouchPoint CEO David Holland is Keeping Up With Industry Changes
Each year, Print+Promo compiles the Top 50 suppliers into one comprehensive list. High sales numbers aren’t achieved by luck. Rather, these firms excel at hearing and responding to the voices of their customers—especially when those voices express differing needs. We asked a few of our top suppliers to talk about their recent accomplishments, leadership style and what they’re doing to stay relevant. Here is what OneTouchPoint, No. 3 on the 2018 Top 50 Suppliers list, had to say.
What was your company’s biggest accomplishment over the last year?
David Holland: Investing in the right people and technology is a core part of our strategy. Over the last 12 months, we’ve made significant capital investments in customer-facing technology and enhancements to equipment at all of our national locations, including digital color printing, inkjet printing, wide-format printing and intelligent inserting equipment. We also brought on senior leadership, adding me in my current role as CEO and recently adding a chief marketing officer.
How is your company positioning itself to continue to stand out in 2019?
DH: OneTouchPoint powers solutions that help customers drive revenue and reduce costs through full-service managed marketing services. Our success and expertise in print services [have] evolved, and we are committed to providing the combination of services that helps our customers meet the demands of their end-consumers, as well as the continuously changing demands of the industry.
Today, we offer cross-channel marketing services—from beautifully crafted, branded materials that engage and influence key customers, to centralized and streamlined online, digital and cross-channel solutions. We will continue to build out the people, process and technology to simplify marketing outreach and supply chain management, allowing our customers to focus on what they do the best.
What must one have, aside from impressive sales numbers, to become a top supplier?
DH: [Someone must have] a do-whatever-it-takes mentality and a passion for getting things right. At the end of the day, we are a pretty big company, but we hear often from our customers that we don’t act like it. They know they can pick up the phone and call us and we’ll answer. We are problem-solvers at heart. Our customers know that we will partner with them to find a solution to even their toughest business challenges. We are partners, not just a vendor, and our customers recognize this. We have a deep understanding of our clients, understanding their business at least as well as they do, and we have the domain expertise to deliver proven solutions. Their success is our success, and that’s built into our DNA.
What is the biggest challenge that people in this industry are facing, and how does your company tackle that matter?
DH: Pure transactional print is a difficult market. Price points are low, it’s highly competitive and consumer behaviors and expectations are changing. It’s not sustainable to simply print ad hoc materials. At the same time, our customers have fewer and fewer internal resources, but greater pressures to perform their jobs. They are looking for single-source services providers who can provide cost and time savings while reducing their workload.
At OneTouchPoint, we have been evolving along with the market to support these changing customer needs. We’ve built deeper, invaluable relationships with our customers, and are delivering solutions across a broad spectrum of marketing and supply chain management needs. We have a unique combination of industry-leading print production capabilities that are impossible to replicate and difficult to find elsewhere, and we have the technology and expertise to expand these more traditional programs deeper into the modern marketing organization, adding value across the entire marketing and supply chain ecosystem.
What is the most enjoyable part about holding your position within the company?
DH: The most enjoyable part of my job is twofold. First, we help customers accomplish their goals by helping them re-engineer their operations and marketing execution business processes to create competitive advantage in the markets they serve. Just as important is working with the great people at OneTouchPoint by creating business strategies to support them and their families, and employing business principles and leadership qualities that they can use throughout their careers.
Whom do you admire as a business leader, and why?
DH: No one in particular comes to mind as the person I admire most, but I do admire the hardworking people in all functions of companies that make a difference every day and are often overlooked. They are the most important part of any successful business. Leaders have the good fortune of being part of organizations supported by these great people.
What else might you like to add to give our readers a better sense of your business approach and the industry at large?
DH: As I’ve mentioned, in the printing industry, change is a must, given the circumstances in the market. With a clear vision and solid execution, there is a terrific opportunity for us to deliver unique and differentiated value to our customers, while continuing to build a best-in-class work environment for our employees.
