Highland Computer Forms Celebrates 25th Anniversary
Highland Computer Forms, Hillsboro, Ohio, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
After 18 years of experience working for two major forms manufacturers, Phil Wilson, president and founder, along with a partner, received financing to start a manufacturing business in 1979. They named the company Highland--after the county in which it was founded. The plant was located in a 3,000 sq. ft. building in Greenfield, Ohio, and operated two daily shifts.
On November 17, 1986, shortly after constructing a second plant in Angola, Ind., the Greenfield plant was destroyed by fire. The new plant's ability to take on the workload of the destroyed site allowed Highland to meet its order commitments. With the Angola plant operating 12-hour shifts, the decision was made to relocate Greenfield manufacturing to Hillsboro, Ohio. By December 27, the Hillsboro site was purchased and plans were underway to make the move. Eight weeks later, the company's headquarters was re-established in Hillsboro.
Since its inception, Highland Computer Forms has operated differently than other forms manufacturers. It began by producing stock tab forms--specializing in odds and ends--in various run lengths. The company also preferred to print wet offset, as opposed to the industry standard of dry offset.
While Highland considers itself to be a forms manufacturer, its philosophy is to sell service. Last year, the company introduced a new customer-focused program called PACE (Partners Assuring Continuous Excellence), which was designed to optimize Highland's relationships with forms distributors through effective communication. The program's primary goal is to tailor Highland's operations to meet distributor's and end-user 's needs. In addition, this fall Highland will introduce an e-commerce platform that will provide distributors and their customers with a Web-based catalog.
Today, Highland Computer Forms remains privately owned and operates five manufacturing facilities throughout the United States. Its product line has grown to include long-, medium- and short-run custom continuous forms, custom cut sheets, health care forms and envelopes, forms with integrated labels and cards, snap-outs and much more.
