Vulcan Information Packaging Leaps into Ultrasonic Technology
Vincent, Alabama-based Vulcan Information Packaging (VIP) has taken a leap into ultrasonic technology with the addition of the Widmann RB 45 U Ultrasonic Sealing Machine. This new technology produces clear overlay loose-leaf binders more than four times the current production rate. At a speed of up to 46 binders per minute, it is the fastest machine of its kind currently available in the world―and also the largest machine at VIP, measuring 70x25' and weighing 33,000 pounds.
“The addition of the Widmann allows VIP to step up to a world-class production capability when producing high volume, clear overlay binders for our private label customers. It also creates opportunities to serve new potential customers that require polypropylene over traditional PVC products,” said Barry Franklin, general manager of VIP.
The new Widmann allows VIP to use polypropylene (PP) material which is more eco-friendly than traditional polyvinyl chloride (PVC), as well as maintain the existing production speed for PVC film binders. PVC is currently used for most products at VIP.
Two rolls of material are loaded onto the machine through feeders equipped with automatic splicing units. When one runs out, the second roll is sealed and pulled. This process takes approximately eight seconds, much faster than the existing process of loading and feeding the rolls by hand. Additionally, most production adjustments are made with servo motors driven from a local controlling computer.
“It is certainly an added benefit to bring new equipment into our factory that improves efficiency and at the same time allows changes in raw materials that will make our finished product more ‘earth friendly,'” said Franklin.
VIP's new PP binders are 100 percent recyclable, have greater resistance to cold crack and temperature fluctuations, and are more durable with higher tensile strength. An added bonus―those annoying "bleeds" and "sticks" from inserted printed sheets won't happen with PP binders.
Machine Features:
• Runs up to 46 binders/minute vs. 10 binders/minute on current equipment
• Manufactured in Germany
• Currently one of only 12 in North America
• One-hour setup versus five-hour setup on current equipment
• In-line logo foil stamping onto pocket for private label
• Automatically detects defective seal and ejects binder
• Less down time with automatic splice and seal roll feeders
• Computer stored settings for quick setup on repeat production
• Computer controlled servo motors for quick adjustments
• Uses polypropylene (PP), which is a more eco-friendly alternative instead of polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
• Die plate maintains constant temperature for consistent seal
Binder Features:
• Made with earth-friendly, non-PVC polypropylene
• PP is safer, non-toxic and better for the environment
• 100 percent recyclable
