The word "instrument" might not seem applicable to something as soundless as a ballpoint pen (unless you count that clicking noise), but as a means of sharing thought and feeling, the pen is the most powerful instrument of all. For countless day-to-day activities, your writing instrument is your most valuable sidekick (they say it's mightier than a sword, you know).
