Meet Me in Atlantic City
Last January, the Atlantic City Council shut the lights on the city that's "always turned on," returning to the classic "World's Famous Playground" slogan. People can debate which description best represents the town, but one thing is certain: Atlantic City has a rich history, free beaches, renovated casinos, first-class dining and a hot club scene. There are some interesting things going on, proving Atlantic City (or A.C.) is more than just a second-rate version of Las Vegas.
Horse diving at Steel Pier. Press coverage of the 1964 Democratic National Convention. Donald Trump. (Okay, bad examples.) But what about the U.S. version of the popular board game Monopoly? Boardwalk and Park Place for the win! And need I say more than "Boardwalk Empire"—HBO's hit series set in A.C. during the prohibition era?
A.C. also is a city of firsts. Most notably, the first boardwalk to ever exist in the United States was built in Atlantic City in 1870. Furthermore, in 1921, as a way to extend the summer season beyond Labor Day, some A.C. businessmen organized a small-scale beauty contest initially featuring "beauty maids" representing seven cities in the Northeast. Margaret Gorman, a 16 year old Washington D.C. native, was the first winner to be awarded a Golden Mermaid statue and the title "Miss America."
The glamor of slot machines and roulette wheels may be hard to resist (whether or not they're working in your favor), but Atlantic City offers so much more in a continual effort to broaden its appeal. Remember this as you attend PROMOTIONS EAST. After the show, don't forget to check out some of the following attractions with friends, colleagues or on your own. Catch a cab, take a stroll or hop the jitney—enjoy!
