Quad/Graphics Inc., Sussex, Wis., will close two plants by the end of 2014. The first, in St. Cloud, Minn., employs 280 people and was acquired by Quad/Graphics from World Color Press Inc. in 2010. The second, in Woodstock, Ill., employs 550 workers and was originally operated by Brown Printing Company, which Quad/Graphics acquired in May 2014.
Scott Schoppert, owner of Printing Impressions in Martinsburg, has been in the printing industry for most of his life.
"I grew up in this business," said Schoppert, whose father owned The Martinsburg News, a weekly newspaper and print shop in Martinsburg that closed several decades ago.
"I learned everything I know from just being there all the time," he added. "Anytime I wasn't in school, I was there."
Though his father sold the shop before he was old enough to take over, Schoppert returned to the printing industry in high school when he began working for Martinsburg Printing Company.
Ennis Inc., Midlothian, Texas, this week announced its financial results for the first quarter ended May 31, 2014. The company's consolidated net sales for the quarter were $141.2 million, an increase of $2.7 million (1.9 percent) from $138.5 million for the same quarter last year.
