The raw material markets have been very challenging since the beginning of the year. Many key material and feedstock producers began the year with depleted inventories and reduced capacities. The recession had caused many producers of specialty chemicals and feedstock to drastically cut back supply when demand dried up in 2008. After living through a number of years of very low margins, and then making the difficult choices of shutting locations, these producers found with a leaner operation and with supply matching much closer to demand it was possible to improve margins. Consequently, as demand picked up raw material producers as well as ink producers were forced to increase prices.

After the successful introduction of the nyloflex FSC Digital, a uniquely soft solid photopolymer plate for corrugated postprint, especially for transit packaging, Luxembourg-headquartered Flint Group Flexographic Products has rounded-off the product portfolio with the launch of the conventional version of the nyloflex FSC printing plate.

Supply shortages, have pushed up the price of pigments, resins and other intermediates used in the manufacture of heatset & directory inks in North America. As a result, Flint Group has announced price increases on heatset & directory products sold in the U.S. and Canada.

Innovative DuraBond technology is the building block of the new coldset and heatset metalback blankets recently launched by Plymouth, Michigan-based Flint Group.

With U.S. headquarters in Plymouth, Mich., Flint Group North America Packaging released its newest universal flexo white laminating ink, PolarTek. It is a white ink that can be used over many existing ink systems to deliver very high bond values with all laminating processes, as well as very low retained solvents. PolarTek can thus often replace several other white inks which may have been needed for the varied structures being printed.
