The BEIP evaluated nearly two dozen projects and ultimately approved eight at a cost to the Bucksport Mill of more than $4.3 million. These included technical improvements to all four of the mill’s paper machines and the conversion to natural gas in one of the mill’s boilers. The improvements reduced nitrogen oxide emissions by 30 percent, sulfur dioxide emissions by 54 percent, water use by 8 percent with additional reductions expected, and sewer losses by 19 percent. The projected annual saving from these projects are $1.3 million.
