Printers to Obama: Please regulate our cleaning rags

The printing and graphic design industry wants the Obama administration to hurry up and regulate the rags that are used to sop up hazardous chemicals.

The draft of a final rule from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been sitting at the White House for more than a year, and the Printing Industries of America and the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association had one question for the White House during a meeting last week: Where’s our rule?

Unjust Pre-funding of Benefits is Killing the Postal Service

The recent U.S. Postal Service financial report for the first three months of fiscal 2013, said that in operational terms the Postal Service had a $100M profit delivering the mail—six days a week. It earned revenues of $17.7B selling stamps and services and had expenses of $17.6B. But the quarter's $1.4B pre-funding cost led to a reported "loss" of $1.3B.

There is much support for rectifying this situation, including from the postmaster general, the postal unions, many industry observers and, most importantly, from hundreds of members of Congress from both parties.

Printing Company Owner and Pressroom Manager Plead Guilty in Oakland (CA) Woman's Death on the Job

Digital Pre-Press International owner and CEO Sanjay Sakhuja, 54, and pressroom manager Alick Yeung, pleaded guilty in San Francisco Superior Court on Wednesday for the death of Margarita Mojica, a 26-year-old Oakland (CA) woman, on Jan. 29, 2008.

Mojica was crushed by a creasing and cutting machine that suddenly activated as she reached into it, prosecutors said.

Sakhuja pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and five felony counts of willful violations of California Division of Occupational Safety and Health regulations causing death or permanent injury, while Yeung pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of violating Cal/OSHA codes.

Champion Hires Chief Restructuring Officer

The corporate parent of Chapman Printing, Capitol Business Interiors and the Huntington Herald-Dispatch newspaper retained Timothy D. Boates of RAS Management Advisors LLC on April 8, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission.

"Mr. Boates will have full responsibility for all of Champion's operations, including but not limited to day-to-day management, and will report directly to Champion's board of directors," the filing said.

The commercial printing company is struggling against a decrease in earnings and a significant amount of high-interest debt on its balance sheet.

RR Donnelley Worker Killed in Tow Motor Accident Identified as Lancaster Man

A mechanic accidentally killed at a commercial printing plant in Lancaster city (PA) Monday morning has been identified as Terry E. Lefever, 53, of Lancaster. Lefever, a married father of two, died in an "accident involving a tow motor," according to Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni. The accident happened shortly before 6 a.m. at R.R. Donnelley & Sons' 1375 Harrisburg Pike plant, he said.

Denise Seeman-Risner, Donnelley's vice president of manufacturing, provided a prepared statement from the company.

NAPL Economists See Modest Growth for Balance of 2013

In the just-released Spring edition of the Printing Business Conditions report, National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL) economists noted that industry sales increased in 2012 for the first time in five years, but the gain was very modest, and a combination of economic and competitive conditions will likely continue to limit overall industry sales growth this year.
