Additionally, Lachner stated that there are two types of e-forms. A software-based e-form is stored as a template in the computer's programming. This template is combined with variable data and sent to a printer.
Lachner defined a hardware-based e-form as that which is stored in the printer itself (for example, a laser printer cartridge or flash memory module). With this type of form, the hardware becomes an extension of the printer's memory and makes available all templates, graphics, logos and special fonts required for electronic forms.
