A 19th century oil-on-canvas painting has become the latest addition to the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) American Treasures stamp series. The new 44-cent stamp features renowned American artist Winslow Homer’s Boys in a Pasture artwork—part of the Hayden Collection at the Boston, Mass. Museum of Fine Arts.
Stow, Ohio-based MACtac supplied the pressure-sensitive adhesive label materials for the 40 million stamps issued. The stamp, which was dedicated at the American Philatelic Society StampShow 2010, is the ninth issuance in this series that showcases exquisite works of American fine art and crafts.
“MACtac is honored to partner with the USPS in bringing to life one of Winslow Homer’s most recognizable works of art through this commemorative stamp,” said Allison Hazel, marketing manager, MACtac Printing Products. “By supplying the adhesive for this new stamp, we celebrate Homer’s artistry and his beautiful, timeless contributions to American art.”
With this commemorative postage stamp, Homer’s art is making its third appearance on a United States stamp. A 4-cent stamp—Breezing Up (A Fair Wind)—featuring a painting of a man and three boys sailing was issued in 1962. Homer’s The Fog Warning painting also appeared as one of 20 designs on the Four Centuries of American Art stamp pane in 1998.
The stamps can be purchased online at www.usps.com/shop, by phone at (800) STAMP-24 and at local post offices.
