Be Daring, Be Different
"Be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary."
Cecil Beaton, English Photographer & Designer,
"The Secret of How to Startle"
Theater Arts, May '57
In recent weeks, I have spent considerable time pouring over the BFL&S archives as well as past issues of a number of other trade magazines. While to some, creativity is an attribute best saved for the artist, throughout the pages of each issue, the call from distributors and manufacturers for creativity, ingenuity and innovation in business practices and products appears again and again.
Certainly, creativity in business must be cultivated differently than paint on canvas, but for success to be achieved and goals to be met, particularly in a constantly changing market place, creativity must be actively recruited, given encouragement and freedom of expression. This is not only true on the design and creative services front, but also an essential ingredient within the sales and marketing departments, IT departments, and throughout all departments within your company walls.
Ready or not, Printing Industries of America and Graphic Arts Technical Foundation have called 2006 the year of digital print. This is the wave of the future and it is fast-approaching. Creativity will be a key element in moving to the front of the pack and carving a new path to success.
