Jones also pointed out there has been a conceptual proposal floated by the California Air Resources Board that could have a major impact on the printing industry. “The idea is to regulate sources down to 7,000 metric-equivalent tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Seven thousand metric-equivalent tons basically equates to 10 million BTUs of a natural gas-fired operation, and it’s collective,” he explained. “[Many] of the boilers alone that printers use are 10 million BTUs. Plus, lots of shops use those little roof-top heating units often see[n] on loading docks, and sometimes as the main heating source. Well, those are [approximately] 250,000 [BTUs] to 350,000 BTUs, so to get to 10 million BTUs doesn’t take much. Factor in any other fuel combustion operation, and you can see the impact of regulating greenhouse gas emissions on even small businesses.”
