A.C. also is a city of firsts. Most notably, the first boardwalk to ever exist in the United States was built in Atlantic City in 1870. Furthermore, in 1921, as a way to extend the summer season beyond Labor Day, some A.C. businessmen organized a small-scale beauty contest initially featuring "beauty maids" representing seven cities in the Northeast. Margaret Gorman, a 16 year old Washington D.C. native, was the first winner to be awarded a Golden Mermaid statue and the title "Miss America."
