Last January, the Atlantic City Council shut the lights on the city that's "always turned on," returning to the classic "World's Famous Playground" slogan. People can debate which description best represents the town, but one thing is certain: Atlantic City has a rich history, free beaches, renovated casinos, first-class dining and a hot club scene. There are some interesting things going on, proving Atlantic City (or A.C.) is more than just a second-rate version of Las Vegas.
Horse diving at Steel Pier. Press coverage of the 1964 Democratic National Convention. Donald Trump. (Okay, bad examples.) But what about the U.S. version of the popular board game Monopoly? Boardwalk and Park Place for the win! And need I say more than "Boardwalk Empire"—HBO's hit series set in A.C. during the prohibition era?
A.C. also is a city of firsts. Most notably, the first boardwalk to ever exist in the United States was built in Atlantic City in 1870. Furthermore, in 1921, as a way to extend the summer season beyond Labor Day, some A.C. businessmen organized a small-scale beauty contest initially featuring "beauty maids" representing seven cities in the Northeast. Margaret Gorman, a 16 year old Washington D.C. native, was the first winner to be awarded a Golden Mermaid statue and the title "Miss America."
The glamor of slot machines and roulette wheels may be hard to resist (whether or not they're working in your favor), but Atlantic City offers so much more in a continual effort to broaden its appeal. Remember this as you attend PROMOTIONS EAST. After the show, don't forget to check out some of the following attractions with friends, colleagues or on your own. Catch a cab, take a stroll or hop the jitney—enjoy!
SHOPPING
If you're into high-end labels like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Betsey Johnson, Coach and Tommy Bahama, then go visit The Pier Shops at Caesars. Or, stop by The Quarter in Tropicana Casino and Resort. With more than 30 shops under one roof, The Quarter offers something for everyone. Stores include: A Time for Wine, Brooks Brothers, Chico's, Godiva Chocolatier, James' Salt Water Taffy and White House/Black Market.
Finally, nothing beats a good bargain at the Tanger Outlets, conveniently located within walking distance from the Atlantic City Convention Center at 2014 Baltic Ave.
FINE DINING
Atlantic City has amped up its culinary scene with restaurants from world-renowned chefs such as Bobby Flay and Wolfgang Puck. Tourists are encouraged to try something new, but there is nothing wrong with a little bit of tradition. There are plenty of favorites to choose from.
Known as "Little Italy by the Sea," Angelo's Fairmount Tavern has become a perennial gathering place for connoisseurs of Italian cuisine. Just go to 2300 Fairmount Ave. to try some wonderful homemade sauces (or gravies).
If you're a night owl, stop by Tony's Baltimore Grill located at 2800 Atlantic Ave. This local favorite is open 24 hours, so treat yourself to a beer and fresh-made pizza at 3:30 a.m.
Finally, visit the White House Sub Shop on 2301 Arctic Ave. Try one of the excellent subs so you can join in on the "Who serves the best sub in the Northeast?" debate.
NIGHTLIFE
By this time, you have perused the aisles of the exhibit hall at PROMOTIONS EAST, shopped till you dropped and feasted on the finest delicacies. Why end the fun early? From lounges to dance clubs and beach bars to comedy clubs, Atlantic City boasts some of the trendiest spots around.
The Pool at Harrah's Resort offers the relaxation of a tropical hideaway, and there's a party every night featuring some of the hottest DJs.
If you're interested in a sensual atmosphere with signature bottle service, go to mur.mur at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa.
Shake your groove thang at Night Fever (formerly Boogie Nights), the ultimate '70s- and '80s-themed dance club open every Friday and Saturday night at Resorts.
Or listen to some of the best musical acts at the House of Blues or The Music Box at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa.
MISCELLANEOUS
No visit to Atlantic City is complete without strolling the world-famous Atlantic City Boardwalk. Consider making a mini-vacation out of PROMOTIONS EAST and sit near the ocean on the free beach—you won't find the beach tag patrol here.
And, of course, you must stop by Margate to see Lucy the Elephant. This six-story high attraction is the only way families can "walk through an elephant and come out alive."
