Calling It Quits After 90 Years: Englewood Cliffs Printing Business to Close

A printing business that's been in operation in Englewood Cliffs for 90 years plans to close this year, citing a stagnant economy and faltering industry chipping away at profits for more than a decade.

Handford Brown Co. Inc. has been running since Jay Handford Brown founded the money envelope and stationery manufacturing plant in 1923.

But now William MacPhail, the grandson of Brown's wife who has been running the company since 1960, plans to stop its machines by the end of the year, not only because of his age—he is 77—but because of changing technology and the challenging economic climate.

RR Donnelley Closing Appleton-area Plant

Chicago-based printing giant RR Donnelley will close its printing facility at W6545 Quality Drive in Greenville before the end of April.

The company said in a WARN notice filed with the state Department of Workforce Development last week that the move will affect 47 jobs.

Quad/Graphics Announces Closure of Dubuque Plant

More than 200 people will soon be out of a job in Dubuque. Quad/Graphics announced Wednesday they are closing its Dubuque plant and permanently laying off all of its employees by early March.

City officials say this announcement isn’t a huge shock. The plant has changed hands several times since it first came to Dubuque in 1949 (Quad Graphics has only operated the facility since 2010). Changes in the printing industry, such as a move toward digital mediums, have resulted in struggles both for the industry and the company.
