Five years after introducing Saphira Aqueous Coatings to the market, Heidelberg recently began manufacturing the coatings locally at its new Hi-Tech Coatings plant, located in the Detroit suburb of Taylor, Mich. A ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening was held Aug. 30.

The chief executive officer of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, known in the U.S. as Heidelberg Printing Machines, said the end of the print industry slump is coming soon.

Company CEO Bernhard Schreier sees an end to the years of decline for Germany's printing-press manufacturers, according to an interview with Welt am Sonntag.

Makers of printing presses will be able to defend market share from digital-print competitors, Schreier told Die Welt. Digital-print makers now have about 10 percent of the market by print volume, and this shouldn't rise to more than 20 percent, Schreier told the German newspaper.

Heidelberg USA announced that James P. Dunn will retire from the company. Harald Weimer will take over as President of Heidelberg USA and Market Head for North America effective later this year.
