The paper industry, for its part, is working to meet that demand. Midwest Energy News in June reported that most U.S. paper mills, even the ones built decades ago, are designed with cogeneration systems that recycle generator heat to power electricity and other industrial processes. Said the news outlet: "Nearly all of the electricity generated at paper and pulp mills nationwide involves CHP [combined heat and power], along with about two-thirds of the electricity they consume, according to sources at the American Forest and Paper Association and the Department of Energy. The paper and pulp sector ranks second of all industries in its current use of CHP, according to a 2012 paper by the trade group."
